What we know about John William ARMSTRONG
naval career is based entirely on three Royal Navy Discharge Certificates and
his death certificate.
The discharge certificates are from:
His death certificate records his place of death as
Greenwich Hospital (the hospital established for serving and retired naval
personnel), London.
John would have been 17 when he served
on HMS Spencer so it is possible he served on some other ship before this date.
His discharge from HMS Queen in 1815 was on the reduction of the Royal Navy at
the end of the Napoleonic Wars but whether
John served on any other ships after this is not known. In 1840
when he was 48 his occupation was recorded as comb maker.
